Photograph of institution for Jewish children in Bojanowo

The care and education institution for Jewish children with one sense damaged in Bojanowo was established on the initiative of Róża Pomeranc-Melcer, a member of the Polish Sejm. The centre was officially opened on 4 July 1926. Children of both sexes aged between 10 and 12 from all over Poland were to be admitted to the institution. Pupils were guaranteed the right to stay until the age of 20.

Children and youth of school age were required to attend a special school operating on the premises of the shelter. It taught writing and reading (Braille for the blind), mathematics, drawing, music and also provided technical classes. Wards were prepared to earn their own living, so they learned basketry, printing, bookbinding and shoemaking (for more details, see in: D. Czwojdrak, Zakład opiekuńczy dla dzieci żydowskich w Bojanowie 1926–1935 [in:] „Kronika Wielkopolski” 2000, no. 4, pp. 19–27).

In the presented photograph, taken in the first half of the 1930s, a group of dozens of educators, carers and pupils of the institution can be seen. Seated from left are teacher Regina (Rifka) Fruchtmann, housekeeper Róża Loewenstein, institution manager Artur Loewenstein, 1st Term Sejm member Róża Melcer, legal advisor Izaak Melcer (Róża's husband), teacher Frieda (Szajndla) Katz, nurse and educator Mathilde (Tilli) Hoffmann, chazan and ritual slaughterer Natan Trzaskała and his wife Tauba Mindla, née Goldblum.
