Photograph of a Jewish bathhouse in Tarnów

A black and white photograph, taken in the 1930s or early 1940s by an unknown author. It shows the building of the Jewish bathhouse (mikveh) in Tarnów, in front of which stalls with goods are set up in the square. The mikveh was built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in the Moorish style. The building has survived to this day and is used for commercial purposes. Currently, the square where the mikveh stands is called Więźniów Oświęcimia (Prisoners of Auschwitz) Square. The name commemorates the first transport of political prisoners sent to Auschwitz on 14 June 1940. The prisoners spent the night before their deportation in the mikveh building. Among the 728 prisoners were several Polish Jews. The photograph was pasted on white cardboard and titled: "Jewish bathhouse." A stamp on the cardboard reads: "M.Eng. W. GIZBERT-STUDNICKI/ GOVERNMENTALLY AUTHORISED ARCHITECT/ AND LEGAL EXPERT/ TARNÓW, 14 ALEJA KNIEWSKIEGO STREET/ TELEPHONE 410". The photograph belongs to a larger collection, created for an unknown purpose after World War II.
