Photograph of the opening of the 3rd International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition

It is part of the collection

In this photo from the opening of the 3rd International Chopin Piano Competition in the Warsaw Philharmonic Hall (in its pre-war décor) we see the participants of the Competition (Felicja is seated in the second row, first from the right next to the middle passage), the members of the international jury chaired by Adam Wieniawski and, in the background, against the background of the organ – a bust of Chopin, branchy palms, the emblem of the Republic of Poland and two crossed white-and-red flags. Wladyslaw Korsak, Deputy Minister of the Interior, is speaking. In the 1930’s, the Chopin Competition, as it is commonly called, gained reputation and attracted talents from far and wide. That was thanks to an international jury composed of outstanding personalities of musical life, as well as support from state institutions: the protectorate of President Ignacy Mościcki and the appointment of an Honorary Committee chaired by the Prime Minister. | In 1937, the competition was conducted, like all pre-war competitions, according to a two-stage formula. Ultimately, 80 participants from 22 countries took part in the Competition. Unfortunately, it was not a successful performance for Felicja Blumental who did not receive any award. The winner was Jakow Zak from the Soviet Union. | Renata Piątkowska
