Photograph of residents of the Moritz Rohr Institution

A shelter for Jewish old people, known as the Moritz Rohr Foundation, was established in Bojanowo in 1900. It provided free social and medical care to the sick and elderly of Jewish origin. Only people of the Jewish faith over the age of 55 (in the case of single men) and married couples where the husband was at least 55 and the wife 50 were admitted to the institution. Priority for admission was given to single men and later also to single women. Admission to the institution was decided by a board, which in each case included a member of the founder's family. The institution had 40 rooms. It strictly observed ritual regulations and celebrated Jewish festivals. The foundation was active until 1939. In December of that year, all residents were deported to Baranów Sandomierski and Tarnobrzeg (D. Czwojdrak, Z dziejów ludności żydowskiej w południowo-zachodniej Wielkopolsce, Grabonóg 2004, p. 90).

The photograph shows residents, staff and guests of the Moritz Rohr Foundation. Seated first from the right is a member of the Leszno Jewish Community Council, most likely its chairman, Henryk Rosenblum. Next to him, Natan Krotoschiner and Louis Peiser, a resident of the Institution. In the second row, third from left, sits Róża Loewenstein, and Malwina Hoffmann is fifth. Second from the right sits chazan and ritual slaughterer Natan Trzaskała. In the third row from the left is an unidentified resident, next to her is Erich Hoffmann, and in front of him is Edziu Loewenstein. Next are Artur Loewenstein and Tauba Trzaskała with a son Henoch. Standing at window level are Paula Fedrich and her mother Lina and Egon Hoffmann. Next to him, Berthold Widmann with his son Herbert.
