The photograph was taken in a winter setting, in the courtyard of a tenement house, against a backdrop of a wooden fence and outbuildings. The people photographed were only briefly called out to take a commemorative photo, none of whom have outer garments. Standing from left are Lina Fedrich with her daughter Paula, Herbert Widmann, his mother Berta and his father Berthold. Lina Fedrich is wearing a black dress with a white collar, Paula a skirt, jacket and white blouse. Herbert is dressed in knee-length trousers, tights, jacket, pullover and shirt, Berta is wearing a long skirt and jacket and her husband a suit with waistcoat. She holds a cigarette in her left hand.
Berthold Widmann was a merchant and ran a fabric shop in Bojanowo. He was born on 23 November 1888 in Dąbrówka Wielka in Upper Silesia. He arrived in Bojanowo from Mysłowice in June 1919. His wife Berta (née Berger) came from Żory and lived in Góra before coming to Bojanowo. They married on 25 June 1919 in Żory. They had three sons, Heinz, Kurt and Herbert, but the two older ones died shortly after birth. Herbert was born on 3 March 1924 in Bojanowo (APL, Bojanowo City Files, file no. 107, pp. 294–295).
Berthold Widmann was the first Jewish victim of the Germans in Bojanowo. He was arrested on the night of 5-6 September 1939 for making critical remarks about the leader of the Third Reich. He was sentenced to death and imprisoned in Rawicz prison, then in Głogów. He died on 16 November 1939 in the Oranienburg concentration camp. Berthold's wife and son were deported to the General Government in December 1939. Berta stayed in Kraków and then in the Kraków ghetto. In 1943, she was taken to the Kraków-Płaszów concentration camp and shot dead between 25 and 30 April. The Widmanns' son, Herbert, reportedly reached Lviv, from where he was deported to Arkhangelsk. He worked in the forest and became seriously ill with pneumonia. He died in 1943. (Letter from Paula Fedrich to D. Czwojdrak, Lüneburg 21 January 1997. According to Paula Fedrich, the sentence on Berthold Widmann was carried out in Głogów).
