Photographs depicting the persecution of the Jewish community in Olkusz

Eleven black and white photographs (positive prints) measuring 10 × 15 cm and smaller photographs depicting the Jewish community in Olkusz between 1939 and 1942. The photographs show individuals wearing armbands and Stars of David on their clothing. The documents include two that illustrate the relocation of Jewish citizens to the local ghetto in September 1941. The ghetto was located on the outskirts, in the vicinity of Parcze, Sikorka, and Słowiki villages. According to the recollection of Maria Alderfiegel, a nurse at the Jewish hospital in the ghetto: "The relocation to the district was done in such a way that the flats abandoned by the Jews had to to be cleaned by Jewish sanitary formations [...]. The Jews had the opportunity to transport their entire belongings to the district using carts. The carts were allocated by the Jewish Community Council. The flats were systematically emptied street by street. The relocation lasted about 10 days" (K. Kocjan, Zagłada olkuskich Żydów, 2nd edition, Bukowno 2017, p. 79). The photographs also depict slave labour of Jews on the streets of Olkusz and near the synagogue.
