Portrait Photograph of Helena Rubinstein in a Hat

It is part of the collection

This portrait photograph of Helena Rubinstein (bust, in a half-profile) was taken, circa 1893, at the Martens, Mais & Cie studio in Vienna. The woman is dressed in an elegant blouse made from a heavy fabric, with a delicate pattern, subtly highlighting a V-shaped neckline, adorned with a small bouquet of live daisies, serving as decoration instead of jewellery. Her head is adorned with a hat featuring a narrow, downward-curved brim, decorated with a wide ribbon and a bow at the front. Her hair is styled up, with soft waves at the front, and strands cascade over her forehead. The background of the photograph is grey and the woman gazes to the right.

This photograph is affixed to a light-brown cardboard with slightly rounded corners. Below the photo, there is a margin with the name of the photographic studio on the left: "Martens, Mais & Cie | K.u.K FOFFOTOGRAFEN", in the centre – the coat of arms of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in blue, and on the right – the location where it was taken: "WIEN I. | HEINRICHSHOF". On the reverse side, there is an ornamental imprint (vignette) featuring the coat of arms of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the name and address of the photographic studio, along with advertising slogans and decorative motifs.

This photograph of Helena Rubinstein dates to her time in Vienna, when she was staying with family and working in a fur shop. The photo portrays a young woman in a romantic style.
