Portrait photograph of Józef Hochsinger

The photograph of Józef Hochsinger may have been one of the photographs that the Hochsinger brothers sent in 1934 to their sister Anna Zimmermann, who lived in Jerusalem (see MPOLIN-A31.3.7, MPOLIN-A31.3.6). Józef was the oldest child of Gustawa and Bernard Hochsinger, born on 6 August 1894. He studied medicine in Berlin and graduated in 1922. In Warsaw, he worked at the Infant Jesus Hospital at 4 Lindleya Street (A. Tuszyńska, I. Chmielewska, Mama zawsze wraca (Mum Always Returns), Warsaw 2020). In the 1930s, he lived in Piekarski's tenement house at 11 Elektoralna Street, see "Urzędowy spis lekarzy uprawnionych do wykonywania praktyki lekarskiej, lekarzy-dentystów, dyplomowanych farmaceutów oraz apekek w Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej" [The Official Register of Doctors Authorised to Medical Practice, Dentists, Certified Pharmacists and Pharmacies in the Republic of Poland, Warsaw 1931, p. 79. In the ghetto, he remained in his own flat, where he also practiced. In Gazeta Żydowska (The Jewish Newspaper) (1941, no. 11, p. 9) he placed an advertisement: "Dr med HOCHSINGER, specialist in heart diseases, hours 10-12, 16-20, 11 Elektoralna Street, tel. 592-11 [bold in the text - R.P.]. In 1942, he moved to 20 Chłodna St. After escaping from the ghetto, he hid with his wife in Warsaw, and took part in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising as a doctor, see Insurgent Powstańcze Biogramy - Józef Hochsinger-Moszczyński [Insurgent Biographies - Józef Hochsinger-Moszczyński] (1944.pl), accessed 11.10.20210. | See also other portrait photographs of Józef Hochsinger: MPOLIN-A31.3.15, MPOLIN-A31.3.22, MPOLIN-A31.3.24.
