The photograph was taken in the village of Donosy (Kazimierza Wielka district) belonging to Stanisław Ludwik Postawka (1837-1917). The author of the photograph is his son, Władysław Postawka (1883-1932), an amateur photographer. Postawka captured the life of his own family, manors, and estates in Świętokrzyskie, as well as the surrounding landscapes and architecture. However, above all, he captured the residents of villages and nearby towns belonging to the family.
As the caption on the photograph indicates, the groom is a cotter, i.e. a tenant, leaseholder. However, it is difficult to determine whether he leased (e.g. a mill or an inn) in Donosy itself, or perhaps in nearby Kazimiera Wielka, where the Jewish community was much more numerous than in the rural area of Donosy.
The photograph is a group portrait of more than a hundred people – the bride and groom and guests at a Jewish wedding in Donosy. In the central part of the frame, there is a bride sitting on a chair. The bride is wearing a white dress and veil. At some distance there is a groom sitting to her left, dressed in a dark coat, silk gaberdine (Yiddish: kapote), and a cap with a brim. In the crowd of over a hundred people, white-clad women and girls dominate. Older and married women wear wigs. Bearded men are dressed in traditional gaberdines and caps with short brims. A few of them are holding infants in their arms. In the background, there are musicians of the Jewish wedding band with instruments, from left to right: drum, trumpet, violin (two young men and a boy), and a double bass. It is noteworthy, especially considering the circumstances and the situation captured in the photograph, that neither the young couple nor any of the wedding participants are smiling. The photograph was taken outdoors on a grassy and undulating terrain enclosed by a wooden fence with an exit gate. On the right side, there is a visible wooden door of a dugout.
