Portrait of a Polish Woman

Szwarc, Marek (1892-1958)

Portret Polki [Portrait of a Polish Woman] painted by Szwarc in 1922, strikes one with its lightness of brush strokes, and the sophisticated, warm brown and cold blue palette with a touch of white and black. The right profile of the young woman was presented in order to stress the line of clothes, the hair and the outline of her face. Despite the fact that half of the woman’s face is "hidden", the model’s psychological features are captured – her joyful nature, bravery in the eye, and curiosity for the future. Until the moment it was submitted to the POLIN museum collection, the painting remained hanging in Marek Szwarc’s studio in Paris. A photograph confirming this information can be found in Louis Vauxcelles’ article: "Marek Szwarc. Tzu zain oyshtelung in Paris" [Marek Szwarc. About his exhibition in Paris], Literarishe Bleter, 1925, no. 42 (20 II), p. 3.

It might be a portrait of Gina Szwarc, the artist’s wife.
