Portrait. Satmer Hasidic wedding, Antwerp

Traczewska, Agnieszka (1969-)

Photo from the wedding ceremony of the Hasidic Satmar family in Antwerp. The artist has captured in a photograph an elderly woman who, like every other married woman in the Hasidic community, is obliged to cover her head. The headgear looks different depending on the specific Hasidic community and dynasty to which the women belong. The woman has small earrings and a single string of pearls. Hasidic women are allowed to wear jewellery, but they must limit the amount of jewellery, even during large celebrations. Apart from the headdress, it is not possible to identify such distinctive elements in Hasidic women's clothing as in men's clothing, but it can be noted that they wear clothes that cover their hands up to their wrists and their legs up to mid-calf. For celebrations or holidays, the dress code is a little more festive.

Other photographs documenting the ceremony are: MPOLIN-M1539 and MPOLIN-M1540.
