Portrait of a Young Jew

Majcher, Alojzy (1907-1943)

The drypoint Portrait of a Young Jew by Alojzy Majcher, an artist from Tarnów, shows a ¾ view of the bust of a Jewish boy. The boy is wearing a jacket and a cap. His face is turned towards the left edge of the image field, and his eyes are directed in the opposite direction. Fragments of architecture are shown in the background, constituting both the second and third plane. The boy was portrayed in the Tarnów market square, in the arcades on the northern frontage of the square. The north-eastern corner of the town hall with its characteristic high attic, emerges from behind an arcade located behind the boy. On the right side of the arcade one can see a rectangular form. It is probably a mezuzah that may have been there in the past, because in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the tenement houses at the market square were owned by Jewish families. In the frame of the graphic, right next to its lower left corner, there is the author's inscription: "drypoint". In the lower right corner, at the same height, there is a signature: "AMajcher".
