Postcard depicting the interior of the Great Synagogue in Tykocin

Probably the oldest photograph showing the interior of the Tykocin synagogue. It was reproduced in numerous copies by the German occupation authorities during the First World War in the "War in the East" series. The picture captures the original furnishings of the synagogue, as well as the first layer of paintings on the eastern wall. On the left is the aron ha-kodesh, i.e. the sacred cabinet in which the Torah scrolls are kept. One can see the words of the thanksgiving prayer on the occasion of the performed circumcision: "Be praised, Eternal Our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us with your commandments and commanded us to bring him into the covenant of our father Abraham". A donation inscription on the arch above the main inscription reads: "This was offered by Cwi-Arie for his son Abraham. May God be praised, who will allow him to be brought up to Torah, to marriage and to good deeds".
