Illustration for Chapter XII of the novel, titled (the chapters have summary titles) "Modlitwa lasu. – Wieś ma serce. – Chłopiec, który najpóźniej się poprawił'' (The prayer of the forest. The village has a heart. The boy who improved last). A depiction – made using a mixed media technique – of three boys sitting on a bed with bedding, looking into the window above them. Outside the window (but also partly in front of the shutters, which open inwards), there are trees and the moon. The boys are listening to the night rustle of the trees.
