Purim. Hasidic women talking in front of a mechitza shielding celebrating men, Me'a She'arim, Jerusalem

Traczewska, Agnieszka (1969-)

The photograph shows women standing behind a partition called mechitza (lit. separation, Hebrew: מחיצה), observing through this openwork curtain the men celebrating Purim. This is linked to the mandate to separate men and women observed among Orthodox communities - even during festive prayers in the synagogue, men and women pray separately, with the latter praying in so-called ezrat nashim (Yiddish: weibershul). The openwork partition between the rooms, however, gives a glimpse of what is happening on the other side.
