Purim holiday, Beit Shemesh

Traczewska, Agnieszka (1969-)

The photograph shows a family from Bet Shemesh in Israel celebrating Purim. In Orthodox Jewish circles, women's and men's groups celebrate separately. This applies to all religious rituals and prayers held, often also to daily life, as women are not supposed to maintain relationships with men as they threaten the principle of modesty. The exception is Purim, Judaism's most joyous festival, known as the Jewish carnival, during which, for this one time in the year, Jews are allowed to put on costumes of the opposite sex and wear masks, and the rule of separation between men and women is relaxed.
