Purim – Jewish Shrovetide

Majcher, Alojzy (1907-1943)

The drypoint Purim – Jewish Shrovetide by Alojzy Majcher, an artist from Tarnów, shows a street genre scene. It is a procession of costumed people celebrating Purim, called the Jewish carnival (formerly it was called Jewish Shrovetide). In the central part of the composition, in the foreground, there are two people in costumes and masks. In the background, five Jews in ordinary, everyday clothes and hats are looking at the costumed people. In the frame, right next to the lower left corner of the composition, is the author's inscription: "drypoint". In the lower right corner, at the same height, there is a signature: "AMajcher".
