Rachel Kreuss at the mechitza during the wedding of her son, Me'a She'arim, Jerusalem

Traczewska, Agnieszka (1969-)

The photos show a woman standing in a synagogue - Rachel Kreuss, a resident of the Orthodox Jerusalem neighbourhood of Mea Shearim. A woman stands by the mechitza, the openwork partition separating the space reserved for women from that occupied by men, and watches her son's wedding ceremony. In some very orthodox Hasidic families, Jewish women take part in rituals or ceremonies only in separate spaces, even during the wedding ceremony the mothers of the bride and groom observe the ceremonies from behind a partition.
