A reliable recipe for building sand houses

Sztyma, Marianna (1973- )

Illustration for Chapter V of Korczak's novel, titled (the chapters have summary titles) "Przedhistoryczne czasy górki pod dziką gruszą. – Niezawodny przepis na budowanie domków z piasku. – Narodziny, rozwój, zagłada'' (Pre-historic times of the hill under the wild pear tree. A reliable recipe for building sand houses. Birth, development, extinction).

A multicoloured depiction of four boys building a sand castle. The artist assembles the composition using various elements and combines these elements with the drawing and also underpaints them, for example:

- the castle is multicoloured, several storeys high, and was created by composing the whole from ten glued elements;

- the castle has small windows and a yellow and blue flag on the top (glued element);

- the boys' drawings are underpainted with ecoline (blue clothes);

- two ladders (drawing) and four pears (drawing) are visible on the castle;

- next to the castle, on the right, is a drawing of three cones on sticks (the sticks are in brown crayon, the cones are in pencil);

- multicoloured blocks (glued paper elements, not only cut out, but also torn) are visible in the vicinity of the castle.

What draws attention in this draft illustration is an element from the initial stage of preparing the board: next to the face of the standing boy, there is a visible sketch from the first drawing of the face – an unfinished profile.

The illustration in the book is printed in yellow and black. The top illustration in the book incorporates a cloud motif.
