Sailing Paper Boats in the Gutter after Rain outside My House

Kirszenblat, Majer (1916-2009)

One of Mayer Kirshenblatt’s paintings depicting the leisure activities of Jewish boys from the cheder in pre-war Opatów (see also e.g. MPOLIN-M1972). The author mentions that the boys would make toys themselves and teach one another how to do it. He himself knew how to make over twenty different toys. Some were associated with particular holidays or seasons.

After a downpour, when the rain changed the town gutters into streams, many children would sail paper boats down the current.
