Satmer Hasidic wedding, Antwerp

Traczewska, Agnieszka (1969-)

The photograph shows Hasidic women at the wedding ceremony of the Satmar family in Antwerp. The women are focused and reading the texts they are holding in their hands, but what catches the eye is their headgear with its fancy patterns. In this way, according to tradition, they manifest their marital status, but the choice of a particular headdress depends on their allegiance to a specific Hasidic family. The headwear worn on a day-to-day basis is dark in colour - bright, patterned ones are only allowed on important occasions such as weddings.

Other photographs documenting the ceremony: MPOLIN-M1539 and MPOLIN-M1541.
