The scarf

Lechtman, Tonia (1918-1996)

part of the collection

The equilateralscarf is made of a fragment of thin cotton fabric with linen weave. The corners of the object were decorated using openwork embroidery techniques. On the edges of the corners one can see a floral motif (of a single flower) made in English embroidery technique. Inside (further from the edge), a geometrical pattern - rhomboidal and a frame - made using the geometrical geometrical pattern technique. The edges are irregular.

Wera and Marcel Lechtman in Marceli Łoziński's film "Tonia i jej dzieci" [Tonia and Her Children] (2011) read, among others, their correspondence with their mother who was imprisoned in Stalinist prison, and with their grandmother who lives in Israel. It is hard to imagine the emotions that could have accompanied a family separated in such a brutal and unjustified way. In her letters to the grandmother, Wera asks her to take them away from the orphanage. The child could not understand why her grandmother, living in Israel, could not do this.
