Seal matrix of a kohen

Seal matrix of a kohen from the collection of the Regional Museum in Pińczów. It shows characteristically placed hands with fingers spread out. It is a gesture of the priestly blessing (Hebrew: birkat ha-kohanim).

In ancient times, the kohanim mainly performed religious functions and presided over ceremonies at the Jerusalem Temple. They were descendants of Aaron, brother of Moses and the first high priest.

A kohen (Hebrew: priest) is still a person of special status in Judaism. Nowadays, men belonging to the lineage of priests have, among other things, priority during the Torah reading in the synagogue, say thanks after meals, etc. They cannot marry a convert or a divorcee. In cemeteries, a separate quarter is designated for them.

Descent from the priests' lineage is indicated by the surname Kohen in various forms.

More information on kohanim can be found in the Polish Judaic Dictionary, https://delet.jhi.pl/pl/psj.
