Self-portrait of an Artist

Szwarc, Marek (1892-1958)

This self-portrait with a palette and brush was painted by the artist during the Szwarces’ stay in Lectoure. A picturesque, rocky village in Occitania (in the department of Gers in Southwestern France). Gina said about this stay and the then-created self-portrait: "my husband’s last two paintings were hanging on the wall. One of them was a self-portrait in greenish palette with our bed with blue columns and canopy in the background. His forehead hidden under the fringe, with slight sideburns on the cheeks, the young man was looking me straight in the eye." (E. Markowa, Wybór, Warszawa 2015, pp. 108–109).
