The Silberstein Factory at 260 Piotrkowska Street

Photographic documentation of the site

The spinning-mill of Markus Silberstein is a four-storey, enormous building with two large towers and it comprises one of the symbols of industrial Łódź. It was designed by Adolf Zeligson. Its specific red colour comes from unplastered bricks. In 1878 the first mechanical weaving-mill was opened there. It processed wool and later it started to deal with cotton. In 1888 other building plots were bought between Dzika (today Sienkiewicza) and Widzewska (today Kilińskiego) streets and a spinning-mill was built at 21 Pusta Street which is currently called Wigury Street. In 1891 The Silberstein Joint-Stock Society of Wool and Cotton Products was established. After Markus Silberstein's death the family business was taken over by his sons: Mieczysław and Stanisław.
