The image of two legionaries with clearly individualised physiognomies, standing in contemplation over the grave of their colleague at Kostiuchnowka, not visible in the frame (as suggested by the caption), is a twin in character and mood to the lithograph Farewell. It is an elegiac double portrait in full mood. | In the context of dedicating the work to legionary doctors, it should be remembered that the artist often portrayed frontline medics, to mention Dr Edward Wertheim (1887-1939; the crayon drawing is in the collection of the National Museum in Kraków), who, like Gottlieb, was of Jewish origin. | AT
