Objects

The small bag is in the form of a small roll made of cotton canvas. It is decorated with quilting with rhomboid pattern (black thread). The bag is tightened with a cordon finished with two tassels. The object has an oval bottom reinforced by stitching with black thread. The edge is secured by stitching (with black thread).

It is difficult to imagine what the prisoners were thinking about when they sewed these bags. Did they plan to use them to store their personal belongings after their release? Perhaps they made them with their loved ones in mind, as can be seen from the initials on some of them. (See Toni Lechtman's statement made years later, quoted in the note to bag MPOLIN-M1026).

The presented bag, due to its small size, brings to mind a box for rather small objects. A letter from Toni Lechtman to her parents dated 31 December 1956 (in the collection), in which she comments on the textiles sent to them, mentions a spoon bag. Perhaps it is this very bag?
