The Small Synagogue in Włodawa

Photographic documentation of the site

The Small Synagogue is currently located at 5 Czerwonego Krzyża Street and was built at the end of the 18th century (before 1786), serving the Jewish community as an additional synagogue and mainly as a place for Talmudic studies. Its external appearance has remained virtually unchanged from its inception to the present day. Only the shape of the windows was slightly altered during the 1915-1916 renovation. The mayor of the town at that time, Jew Leib Lichtenberg, contributed to the redevelopment. Almost all of the decor, including the bimah and the aron ha-kodesh, was destroyed during the Second World War. The Germans converted the small synagogue into a shop and military storage. Both synagogues were intended as storage for the Ukrainian cooperative "Sojusz".
