Small synagogue in Zamość

Photographic documentation of the site

The second of Zamość's synagogues, a small synagogue in the Nowa Osada district, was built in 1872. Before it was built, a wooden synagogue stood on the site (at least from the mid-19th century), covered with shingles. It is 60 feet long, 39 ¼ feet wide, and 16 feet high. There was an arcade adjacent to the front that led to the vestibule. The interior of the synagogue was illuminated by 12 windows. The babinet, also known as the women's school, was located both in the ground floor chamber and on the ground floor, where one entered by stairs from the arcade. The women's room on the ground floor was illuminated by eight windows. In 1857, it was estimated that approx. 200 men and 150 women attend the synagogue. However, it could accommodate more people at a time: 300 men and 200 women.
