Soldiers

Jamiołkowska, Aleksandra (1993- )

Depiction of three Polish Luck [Ukr. Lutsk] defenders from September 1939. Among them Abraham Diatłowicki who was later arrested by the NKVD.

Boys are standing in an urban area: on the left, at the top there is a massive, dark wall with vertical, rectangular holes. The shades of darkness differ – which is accented by the artist by the usage of different line density (the rarest lines – in the upper left corner – are also the thickest). A street light on the left side of the building; some other buildings can be seen in the back, to the right. Beside them, further to the right, the outlined figures in caps and coats. Pencil smudges, dense especially at the bottom of the composition.

In the short film Syberyjski diament [Siberian Diamond] (2016) based on the videotaped oral history interview with Jerzy Diatłowicki (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgxK-5rEiRU) the image is intercut with Jerzy’s narration about the arrest of sixteen-year-old Abraham, the youngest brother of Jerzy’s father. In September 1939, he was allegedly shooting at the Red Army soldiers as they were entering Luck. It is intercut specifically with the words: "Were they shooting, were they not, no one is to know. The fact is the boy was taken, and vanished into the air no trace – till this day".
