Street Vendors at a Market

Erb, Erno (1878-1943)

Erno Erb was born in 1878 into an assimilated Jewish family from Lviv (some sources give 1880 as his birth year). He spent almost his entire life in Lviv and Truskawiec (Truskavets). He was a self-taught artist. In his works, he depicted motifs from city life, genre scenes, marketplaces, typical representatives of Ukrainian peasantry and Jewry, landscapes, and still lifes. Erb’s output was exhibited many times at the Friends of Fine Arts Society (Polish: Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Sztuk Pięknych) in Lviv and Kraków as well as in Warsaw’s Zachęta Gallery. In 1922, the artist took part in the Polish General Exhibition in Poznań, and in 1932 – in “The Art of Poland” exhibition in Buffalo. He died in Lviv in 1943.
