Striding Figures

Bok, Teodor (1947-2007)

It is part of the collection

Maintained in refined tones of black, grey and white, Teodor Bok's graphic work Stepping Figures depicts a mechanised, ordered, disembodied and soulless world. The three human-shaped figures, made of wood and metal, have (post)war attributes: their heads are helmets, one of them has a leg wrapped in bandages, the other is made of wooden segments–bones, and two loose guts are coming out its innards (?). The silhouettes, that are automated, subjected to a detailed description (letters identifying each part) are drawn into a background formed by grid paper, a circle, rulers, and compasses.

The print was a gift from Bok to Wojciech Przybyszewski and his wife Danuta, as was the ex-libris designed for them (see letters from Teodor Bok to Wojciech Przybyszewski). Its content refers to Wojciech and Teodor's shared passion – the mountains. Against the background of the pointed peaks, a caveman in full gear is depicted emerging from a cave (symbolized by the bat in the upper left corner). The Przybyszewskiks' print was glued into Bok's graphic work Striding Figures (see letters from Teodor Bok to Wojciech Przybyszewski, 1975).
