Szczury (Rats) (three female heads)

Siemaszko, Olga (1911-2000)

A contour drawing of three human heads, probably deceased prisoners of the Auschwitz camp. In the volume "Ręka umarłej" (Hand of a Deceased) printed at the top of page 54 (in fact, the object in the author's archive was located, with an additional backing, in a passe-partout with an inscription in pencil indicating this page). In print, it was incorporated into the text of a story in which the heroine-narrator works in the barracks for the sick and in one of them she sees a body slightly eaten by rats; she later finds their nest. The story does not mention any other bodies seen by the heroine that day.
