Tallit with cover

Tallit in the form of a wide band made of faux silk. On the sides, there are blue stripes of varying width. The sides are trimmed with tassels made of thick silk thread. The corners of the tallit are reinforced with four-sided damask patches decorated with the motif of the Star of David, plant twigs, and inscriptions in Hebrew. Longer knotted fringes – tzitzit – are attached to each corner of the tallit. A white jacquard fabric atarah decorated with Stars of David and Hebrew inscriptions is sewn to one of the longer sides. The item comes with a cover made of linen, resembling an envelope fastened with a button.

The tallit was donated to the Museum by Salomon Freifeld from Przemyśl in 1974.

In 1950, the Social and Cultural Association of Jews was founded in Przemyśl at 3 Tarnawskiego Street. Its main objective was to preserve Yiddish culture and language. It had some 50 members – Jewish Holocaust Survivors living in Przemyśl – who would meet in a large, well-equipped clubhouse with a library of books in Polish, Hebrew, and Yiddish. One of the Association’s leading activists was Salomon Freifeld, who was a member of its first management board and concomitantly worked as its secretary.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Freifeld donated several items connected with Jewish culture and tradition to the National Museum of Przemyśl, including tallitot, kippot, and phylacteries.
