Toynbee-halle Synagogue in Chernivtsi

Photographic documentation of the site

The synagogue at today's address of 10 Turećka Street (Ukr. вулиця Турецька, 10) was founded between 1912 and 1913 on the initiative of Leon Keller (1859-1928), philologist and Zionist, lecturer at the University of Chernivtsi. The "Judische Toynbee-halle" (this inscription, in German and Hebrew, originally appeared on the façade of the building) was an undertaking on "Bukovina soil" concerning the ideas of the British economist and philanthropist Arnold Toynbee, preaching the need for education and the improvement of the living conditions of the lowest strata of the working classes.
