Train

Jamiołkowska, Aleksandra (1993- )

Imagined depiction of the train used to displace the Diatłowickis: a locomotive with a long trail of carriages behind (getting smaller with perspective). The locomotive is turned toward the viewer: presented from the front, mostly black, the front part of the chimney and the left side are also visible. Under the depiction of the locomotive, heading diagonally to the left, the track lines with horizontal segments across to the right of both lines, near the front of the locomotive. Closer to the left edge – just the lines (continuing till the end of the sheet). Above to where the middle and the back parts of the train are drawn there are some traces of puffs of smoke (most probably). The right side of it is vaguely erased – traces of outline, as well as of shading, still visible. On the left of the train there is an orphan line – potentially a part of some previous draft.

In the short film Syberyjski diament [Siberian Diamond] (2016) based on the videotaped oral history interview with Jerzy Diatłowicki (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgxK-5rEiRU) the image is intercut with Diatłowicki’s narration about his family being deported to the East in April 1940, specifically the words: "And straight to the train, just two hours to pack". Note that Małgorzata Kozera-Topińska, who edited the film, invited Jamiołkowska to contribute the visual material for the intercuts, being acquainted with her diploma of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, for which Jamiołkowska created the graphic design to the children’s classic O psie, który jeździł koleją [About the Dog who Travelled by Rail] by Roman Pisarski (https://www.behance.net/ajamiolkowska; access 21.08.2020).
