Travel document of Krystyna Niedziółka (Kurc)

It is part of the collection:

Krystyna Niedziółka's travel document - as Krystyna (Fanny) Kurc was called at the time (a travel document - a passport-type document, issued to a person who did not have Polish citizenship; Polish Jews leaving Poland in March '68 had to sign a document of renunciation of citizenship).

The cover is of green colour, typical for these documents. On p. 2, the following was typed, as the place of residence: Warsaw; date of birth: 7 August 1937; on p. 3 a photo and signature of the owner. The document expiry date: 30 June 1969.

It was issued on 16 May 1969, which means that Krystyna Niedziółka made the decision to leave before the famous announcement, published, amongst the others, in "Trybuna Ludu" and "Życie Warszawy" in mid-June, which mobilized many hesitating Polish Jews to leave.

The luggage check-in (the seal on page 17) took place on 27 May 1969. The crossing of the Polish Czechoslovak border on 2 June1969 (the seal of Zebrzydowice on p. 7; the seal of Piotrowice near Karviná on p. 9, next to the Czechoslovak visa). The departure from Vienna and arrival to Israel from Vienna – 3 June 1969 (the seal on p. 11, above the Austrian visa from Warsaw).

Krystyna left for Israel after obtaining a divorce, but the travel document also includes the surname of her ex-husband. In Israel, she considered returning to the name Kurc, but at that point, shortly after arriving to the new country, it was too difficult a task for her for administrative reasons.
