Two-handled cup

A two-handled cup (known as a "netile"), handmade from copper sheet, was used for ablution, the ritual washing of the hands. The inside of the vessel was lined with tin. The vertical cross-section of the cup is similar to a trapezoid, arcing upwards. The two copper sheet handles are placed side by side at a distance of approx. 8 cm. Each was fixed with three copper rivets.

Vessels of this type were commonly used by Jews for ritual hand washing, for example, before meals or after leaving the cemetery. According to Jewish insiders, such a vessel was called a "quart" or "kwuart", regardless of capacity.

The item was purchased for the collection of the Lublin Open Air Village Museum in 1987 from an inhabitant of the village of Sosnowica (Parczew County, Lubelskie Province).
