Umschlagplatz in Lublin

Photographic documentation of the site

At 9 Turystyczna Street, a modern municipal slaughterhouse was erected between 1926 and 1929. Railway tracks and a loading ramp were also built there, as goods from the slaughterhouse were to be exported to many countries across Europe. During World War II, the Germans took over the entire area of the slaughterhouse. On the railway siding they created the Umschlagplatz, from which transports from Lublin to the Bełżec death camp set off. Deportations began on 16 March 1942, and it is estimated that by 14 April, so in the course of less than a month, approx. 26,000 Lublin Jews were transported.
