Universe / Universum 1987

Schor, Resia (1910-2006)

The composition "Universum" [Universe] is composed of a painting and metalwork placed between two sheets of plexiglass. The basis of the composition is a painting work – a circle, made up of many different coloured circles: an outer circle of blue with a greenish glow, another circle of gold, then orange-red with bright rays and gold again. The centre of the wheel is ultramarine. Light background, hatched in light green and navy blue. A thin frame of white metal is superimposed on this composition. From the left edge of the frame, 10 metal-cut rays spread out, composed into five large spreading rays made up of two smaller ones. The middle, longest two rays pass through the centre of the circle. The whole is cut from a single piece of metal. On each radius is a square metal head (approx. 1.2 – 1.3 cm).

Universe (from Latin: universum) - everything that physically exists: all space, time, laws of physics, physical constants and all forms of energy and matter. According to our current understanding, the Universe consists of three components: space-time, forms of energy (including electromagnetic radiation and matter) and the laws of physics that apply to them. The Universe, the outer space, is thus usually defined as everything that exists, everything that has existed, and everything that will exist. The universe thus encompasses all life and history. | RP
