Untitled

Rzędowski, Marian (1906-1983)

part of the collection

The sculpture was carved with a chisel in a small fragment of a wooden block, partially unbarked in the back, which further accentuates the deliberate rawness of the material. The carved faces of an adult and a child freeze in a grimace of silent suffering. What strikes the eye are two almost abstract facial outlines at the edges of the composition, which could be a visualisation of symbolic portraits of the dead. They are the reason why, although the period of the work's creation clearly indicates the drama of the anti-Semitic campaign, the sculpture may also evoke associations with the Holocaust.
