Untitled (Muranowski Square)

Żmijewski, Artur (1966 - )

Black-and-white photograph taken with a wide-angle lens showing the current view of the square between the Anders Street (ul. Andersa) and Stawki Street (ul. Stawki) – the site of the former Muranowski Square (plac Muranowski) in Warsaw. The square was laid out back in the late 18th century, in front of the Murano Palace, which was demolished at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and replaced by tenement houses. From the beginning of the 19th century, there were markets organised on the square; it was also the venue for performances by circus and theatre groups. At the end of the 19th century a tramway track was laid there – at first for the horse-drawn trams, then for electric ones. Muranowski Square (plac Muranowski) was an important communication and commercial part of the northern district inhabited by the Jewish population. After the outbreak of the Second World War, the area became part of the Warsaw Ghetto, and between 1941 and 1942, there was an internal tram line, marked with the Star of David, running here. When the area of the ghetto was reduced in 1942, the buildings on the northern frontage of the square fell outside its boundaries, which is why the Jews had to move out. During the Ghetto Uprising, Muranowski Square (plac Muranowski) was the scene of fighting – after the uprising collapsed, most of the buildings were demolished. After the end of the Second World War, during the reconstruction of the Muranów district, the square was liquidated.
