Untitled (Ringelblum Archive 2)

Żmijewski, Artur (1966 - )

It is part of the collection

Next to MPOLIN-M1044, this is the second frame of the same subject - a black-and-white photograph taken with a wide-angle lens showing the Ringelblum Archive memorial site. In August 1942 and February 1943, in the basement of the no longer existing building at 68 Nowolipki Street (ul. Nowolipki 68, currently there is a square, visible on the photograph, between the tenement houses at 28 Nowolipki Street [ul. Nowolipki 28] and 30 Nowolipki Street [ul. Nowolipki 30]) activists of the underground group Oneg Shabbat hid in metal containers and milk cans the documents of the Underground Warsaw Ghetto Archive also know as the Ringelblum Archive. This collection is a priceless source depicting the Holocaust of the Polish Jews. The documents preserved include reports, official prints, underground press published by political groups and Oneg Shabbat, as well as accounts and diaries depicting the Holocaust. The importance of the collection was recognised by the UNESCO Committee which included the Ringelblum Archive on the Memory of the World Register in 1990. After the end of the war, on 18 September 1946, the first part of the archive collection was dug up from the rubble of the house, while the second part was recovered on 1 December 1950. Despite many attempts, the third part of the archive, which was supposedly hidden on the area of the property at 34 Świętojerska Street (ul. Świętojerska 34, currently the premises of the Chinese Embassy) has not been found to this day. Thanks to the efforts of Prof. Jacek Leociak, the History Meeting House, the KARTA Centre, the Jewish Historical Institute, the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, the Muranów Station and the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites, the site where the Ringelblum Archive was hidden was commemorated.
