Untitled (St Sophia hospital 1)

Żmijewski, Artur (1966 - )

It is part of the collection:

One of the shots taken with a wide-angle lens showing the structure of the St Sophia Hospital (Szpital św. Zofii) in Warsaw, founded before Second World War by the Jewish banker Leon Feliks Goldstand and his wife Zofia, as well as by the Warsaw City Council. The facility is located at the Żelazna Street (ul. Żelazna 88). It was the first maternity hospital in Warsaw and began operating in 1912. It was very modern from the beginning, and in the 1930s it was transformed into a gynaecological and obstetrical hospital, which just before the Second World War was considered the best such facility in Poland. At the beginning of the war, it was annexed as a military hospital – first a Polish one and then, already in October 1939, turned into a German facility. Although the building was located in the area of the delimited Warsaw Ghetto, it was excluded from it. In 1942 it became a hospital for the Pawiak prison. It was not until 1956 that it regained its original function.
