Untitled (Żelazna 103 1)

Żmijewski, Artur (1966 - )

One of the black-and-white shots, next to MPOLIN-M1068, taken with a wide-angle lens, showing the current view of the building at 103 Żelazna Street (ul. Żelazna 103) in Warsaw, which was housing the ‘Befehlstelle’ (command post) during Second World War. From 15 July 1942, this tenement house was the headquarters of the Vernichtungskommando, i.e. the extermination squad of the Sonderkommando der Sipo-Umsiedlung. It is from here, that Hermann Höfle personally directed the deportation of Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto to the Treblinka extermination camp. In the basement of the building there was a prison where Jews caught outside the ghetto were held. The courtyard of the tenement house was the place of regular executions. During the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, on 23 April 1943, a group of fighters led by Natan Szulc attacked the jail in an attempt to free the prisoners. The action ended with the defeat of the insurgents. Germans left the building in July 1943.

After the war, a commemorative plaque with the inscription was placed on the outer wall of the building: “Tribute to the memory of thousands of Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto, who, in 1943, were martyred to death in this house by Gestapo.”
