Untitled (Żelazna x Solidarności)

Żmijewski, Artur (1966 - )

It is part of the collection

Black and white photograph taken with a wide-angle lens, showing the current view of the junction of Żelazna Street (ul. Żelazna) and Solidarności Avenue (al. Solidarności), the former Żelazna Street (ul. Żelazna) and Leszno Street (ul. Leszno). In November 1940, a section of the Żelazna Street (ul. Żelazna) between Grzybowska Street (ul. Grzybowska) and Leszno Street (ul. Leszno, currently al. Solidarności) found itself within the boundaries of the closed Jewish quarter (the ghetto). By August 1942, the Żelazna Street (ul. Żelazna) was the only road link between the southern and northern parts of the ghetto. After one side of the street, with odd numbers, was excluded from the ghetto in December 1941, when the ghetto itself was divided into the so-called Small Ghetto and Large Ghetto, a wall was erected in the middle of the street. The tenement house visible in the centre of the frame, now located at 149 Solidarności Avenue (al. Solidarności 149), formerly 77 Leszno Street (ul. Leszno 77), is a pre-war building that was located within the boundaries of the ghetto and has survived to this day.
