View of Łowicz

Pągowski, Zdzisław (1909-1976)

A landscape depicting a fragment of Łowicz – a view of a meadow cut by a canal, the banks of which are lined with stone slabs. A bridge is located across the canal. In the background there are town buildings with the towers of the collegiate church towering over everything. In the lower left corner there is inscription: "ŁOWICZ 47"; the signature mark in the lower right corner reads: "Z. PĄGOWSKI".

The stone slabs are matzevot from the Jewish cemetery in Łowicz, which was devastated by the Germans during World War II. At that time, matzevot were used, among other things, to fortify the embankments of the Bzura River.

The author of the drawing is the esteemed Łowicz visual artist, Zdzisław Pągowski (1909-1976), creator of oil paintings, watercolor paintings, posters, seals, bookplates, designer of sculptures and monuments, social activist, and lover of the Łowicz Land.
