Illustration for Chapter XVIII of the novel, titled (the chapters have summary titles) ,,Sprawa o domek Paulinki. – Pobór do wojska. – Pułkownik Suchta. – Wojna'' (Paulinka's house affair. – Conscription. – Colonel Suchta. – War).

The boy depicted lying on the branches is Czesiek Śniatała. While playing war, he started crying while saying goodbye to his sister. According to the rules, such behaviour is attributed to injured or sick people, which is why he found himself under the care of the "Sisters of Mercy" in the play hospital.

There are two enemy armies in the background with the banners they fought to capture.

The illustration is multicoloured, but in the book it was printed only in yellow and black, also with added cloud elements at the top.
