Wedding in the Satmer family, Petah Tikva

Traczewska, Agnieszka (1969-)

The woman visible in the photograph is a bride from the Satmar family during a wedding ceremony in Israel's Petach Tikva. Satmar is now the largest Hasidic dynasty with roots in Hungary and Romania. Satmar families today live primarily in the United States, as well as in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. but also in Israel, despite the community's strong anti-Zionist views and recognition that Jews should live in the Diaspora until the coming of the Messiah.

The bride definitely stands out from the women surrounding her in the photograph who are dressed in dark outfits and dark headgear. Her white dress is in line with the Western wedding canon, further distinguished by rich jewellery pieces, the wearing of which is forbidden on a daily basis for women from Hasidic families.
