Where is the Nalewki Street?

Żmijewski, Artur (1966 - )

MBK Film without sound, without opening and closing credits, shot from a drone (filmed by Andrzej Stawiński, edited by Lech Molski). The narrative, moving slowly but steadily, shows a bird’s-eye view of buildings, streets and pavements in a documentary manner, without any commentary. It is a reconstruction of the route of the no longer existing Nalewki Street (ul. Nalewki), from the beginning of the current Stare Nalewki Street (ul. Stare Nalewki) at the Długa Street (ul. Długa), next to the characteristic white block of the majestic Monument of the Battle of Monte Cassino through the Krasiński Garden, Anders Street (ul. Andersa) and over the buildings up to the current Nalewki Street (ul. Nalewki) – along its historical course.

Before the Second World War, Nalewki Street (ul. Nalewki) was one of the city’s main routes, the main artery of the Jewish Northern District, also known as the Nalewki-Muranów District. The street development was destroyed during the war and never rebuilt. The street has survived only in a short section as the current Stare Nalewki Street (ul. Stare Nalewki), which until 2019 was the Bohaterów Getta Street (ul. Bohaterów Getta).

Today, the name Nalewki is carried by a small street located 100 metres west of the historic Nalewki Street, between Zamenhof Street (ul. Zamenhofa) and Dubois Street (ul. Dubois). It is located where Gęsia Street (ul. Gęsia) used to run before the war.

The film, shot during the Covid-19 virus pandemic, is additionally a record of an empty city, deprived of normal urban life due to the necessary isolation of its inhabitants and which, although independent from the author’s intention, may bring to mind the extermination of the Jewish inhabitants of Muranów.
